Shaïn Morisse on the co-authored book 'Brick by Brick by Brick, Wall by Wall: A History of Penal Abolitionism'
Shaïn Morisse (Université Paris-Saclay)
ABSTRACT: There is, first of all, an obvious truth: the services that prisons are supposed to provide can never compensate for the harm they cause. Since the 1960s, this recognition of a vast and ongoing failure has led to the emergence of a broad movement committed to penal abolitionism – not only the abolition of all prisons, but also of the other institutions that make up the penal system, such as the police and the courts. This political project thus pursues an ambitious goal: to truly deliver justice to victims and respond to their needs, while also preventing both systemic and interpersonal violence.
By drawing on the transnational trajectories of political movements that have placed a radical critique of the carceral and judicial system at the core of their approach, this book – the first of its kind – offers essential documentation to inform and inspire contemporary struggles
