The theory and practice of Islamic law, women’s rights, activism and politics: Research and Reflections from the national and international stage
Prof. Shaheen Ali, University of Warwick
Abstract:
In my presentation I would like to share some examples of my life and work as an activist academic and how my research was informed by my activism, participation in politics as well as positions in various expert bodies at the United Nations. These experiences in turn followed me into academia and into the classroom where I shared my research with my students hopefully, enriching their perspectives on the relationship between theory and practice of human rights and women’s rights in Islam and international law. In a career spanning half a century there are many stories to tell but bearing in mind time constraints, I will focus on a few and participants are welcome to pose questions. Themes will include:
- My Work around the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against women (CEDAW); (Examples: advocacy, member of Prime Minister’s Consultative Committee for Women, Senate Committee on the Status of Women; NCSW statute);
- Integrating human rights and women’s rights into government policies. Examples from my time as cabinet minister for Health, Population welfare and Women’s Development in Pakistan. (Women’s Toilets, removing discriminatory policies in promotion of Women Medical Officers)
