Week 2: Life Imprisonment and the Limits of Punishment in India

Join DPhil Law student Ayan Gupta for a fascinating discussion on the use of life imprisonment in India and a broader conversation around the penal state and the limits of punishment.

Ayan's research examines the increasing use of Life Imprisonment without Parole in India. He is interested in understanding how this punishment's rise came about, what this tells us about the expansion of the Indian penal state's power to punish, and how we can evaluate the legitimacy of this expansion. In this discussion, he will present an account of the current direction of his research and discuss the dilemmas he is facing about whether India, the geographical site of his work, is the primary subject of the study or whether it is only a case study through which to examine the authority to punish.

Speaker Bio: Ayan Gupta is a DPhil Law student at the Centre for Criminology. His project is titled "The Rise of Life Imprisonment without Remission: A Search for the Limits of Punishment in India"
