Smart Prisons: How AI Can Change Imprisonment

Join Early Career Research Fellow Federica Fedorczyk for a fascinating discussion about the impact of AI on imprisonment and the rights of detainees.

Abstract: This research project investigates how the diffusion of AI in prisons and in migration detention systems is reshaping the purpose of imprisonment. Across a growing number of jurisdictions, prisons and migration detention centres are being equipped with algorithmic tools for behavioural prediction, biometric monitoring, video analytics, digital communication control and AI-assisted rehabilitation. While often presented as merely efficiency-enhancing or risk-reducing measures, these technologies profoundly affect the rights of individuals whose liberty is already restricted and can produce a structural shift in the purposes behind imprisonment.

Speaker Bio: Federica Fedorczyk is an Early Career Research Fellow at the Institute for Ethics in AI and a Research Fellow at Reuben College. She is also an Affiliate at the Information Law Institute of NYU Law School. She has a PhD in Law and her research lies at the intersection of criminal law, AI regulation and human rights.
