ExpLaw Ambassadors x 5
INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY
Deadline for applications: 19 June 2022
The Admissions and Outreach Officer in the Faculty of Law, Emma White, is looking for five ExpLaw Ambassadors for the 2-day residential Freshfields ExpLaw Summer programme in Oxford. All Ambassadors will work 28 and 29 July during the day, and will also be required to work one night shift on the night of 28 July; and two of the five will also be required to work on the 27 July nightshift.
This is a great opportunity to help the Faculty in its Access and Outreach work. The Freshfields Oxford ExpLaw Summer School is a summer school organised by the Faculty of Law and supported by the law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. The aim of the Summer School is to provide academically talented students from UK state schools with the opportunity to experience the University of Oxford and learn about the study of law. Participants have been selected according to academic merit and a variety of socio-economic factors. During the 2-day summer school, participants will take part in a range of legal lectures and discussions, information talks about admissions and studying law at Oxford, and visits to a range of Oxford colleges. A social activity of punting on the River Cherwell will also be provided on the evening of 28 July and all ambassadors are expected to take part. This role also includes night staff duties on the night of the 27 (and for some on the 28 July too). All ambassadors will stay at St Edmund Hall with summer school participants.
In total, five ExpLaw Ambassadors will be engaged for this work. All will have night duties on the 28 July and 2 ambassadors will have additional night duties on the night of 27 July. Please also be aware that we require a gender balance for safeguarding.
Duration and hours
The main Freshfields ExpLaw Summer Programme will take place on 28 – 29 July, with ‘Early Birds’ arriving at St Edmund Hall the evening of 27 July. On 28 July night staff will meet the main cohort of participants at a pre-arranged time and location to welcome them to the summer school and facilitate introductions.
Ambassadors will work roughly 20 hours over the 2 days, being available for the day but with breaks between manoeuvring students from place to place.
Wednesday 27 July 2022 | 5pm - 10pm | 2 Ambassadors on night duty only |
Thursday 28 July 2022 | 8am – 10pm | 5 Ambassadors throughout day with night duties |
Friday 29 July | 8am – 4pm | 5 Ambassadors throughout day |
Plus ‘on call’ night staff duties on one or more of the following nights: 27, 28 July. | Night duty from 10pm – 8am | |
Accommodation / Food / Expenses
All ExpLaw Ambassadors will be provided with free accommodation at St Edmund Hall on the night of Thursday, 28 July. 2 Ambassadors providing night duties will also receive free accommodation on the additional night worked on 27 July.
All meals will be provided and will be taken with summer school participants.
The Faculty of Law will reimburse ambassadors for reasonable travel expenses to and from the summer school if not located in Oxford (please note, this will be a taxable expense; we will advise the ExpLaw Ambassadors about this once appointed). Ambassadors should purchase their own tickets, and make use of any practical measures which reduce ticket price, for example advanced booking and use of a 16-25 railcard (if applicable).

All Ambassadors will report to Emma White, Admissions and Outreach Officer, who will be responsible for approving timesheets.
