Managing Editor, Oxford Human Rights Hub (OxHRH)

Prof. Sandy Fredman is looking for a suitable candidate to join the Oxford Human Rights Hub Editorial Team as Managing Editor. Since its launch in July 2012, the OxHRH has fast become a leading source of human rights news and opinion, featuring blog posts from leading judges, lawyers, academics and human rights activists from across the globe. It has also established a large readership and a strong social media following, with approximately 10,000 unique visitors to the Oxford Human Rights Hub website per month and over 8,000 followers on Twitter. The OxHRH also runs high level seminars and conferences, having featured judges, UN Special Rapporteurs, leading academics, QCs and public interest law practitioners from across the world.

The successful candidate will continue to develop the vision for the blog, maintaining high standards by widening the OxHRH’s reach and capturing new developments in human rights law. She or he will continue to develop and co-ordinate our network of voluntary regional correspondents. The Managing Editor will also be required to continue to build on and innovate our internet presence including the promotion of the blog via social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) and raise the blog’s profile by contributing to the ‘blog highlights’ via the monthly newsletter. The post holder will also act as the chief editor of our annual blog anthology and contribute to our submissions to other publications (such as our annual report), and reports on progress and developments relating to the OxHRH blog. She/he will also aim to support the Directors with the recruitment and selection of editors where necessary. Key to the success of this role will be working closely with the Research Coordinator and Deputy Director, ensuring that post holders work collaboratively to ensure seamless coordination of duties.

Duration and hours

The work is to start as soon as possible and will run until 30th June 2017.

The hours will vary, but it is expected that you will work a maximum of 30 hours a month. The Managing Editor should be prepared to work during vacations, but does not need to be based in Oxford during this time.

Reporting

The Oxford Human Rights Hub Managing Editor will report to Professor Sandy Fredman.

Requirements

 Candidates are required to have:

  • A completed first degree, specialising in Law;
  • Knowledge of  human rights law, global human rights news and developments; 
  • Editorial experience in educational publishing including excellent writing and editing skills and a good understanding of language and grammar pedagogy;
  • Good knowledge of print, broadcast , online and social media;
  • Ability to translate legal and human rights developments into a format that appeals to a global audience with varying interests and knowledge of the subject;
  • Good administration, coordination and IT skills with some experience of coordinating a team;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • The ability to deal sensitively with authors, audience and other stakeholders;
  • Excellent team working (both within a research team and administrative environment) with strong networking skills.

It would be beneficial, but not essential for candidates to have:

  • Experience and skills in planning and managing projects;
  • Experience of recruiting and training staff;
  • Experience of co-ordinating cross-functional teams.

Eligibility

This post is open to current graduate research students in the Law Faculty and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students.  Regrettably this position is not open to BCL/MJur and MLF students.

Rate of Pay

This will be paid at the standard research assistant rate of £14.01/hour plus holiday pay of £2.40 = total of £16.41/hour. **
