DPRU partners appointed to UK House of Lords
Professor Carolyn Hoyle and the Death Penalty Research Unit (DPRU) team are delighted to acknowledge the announcement that their partners Parvais Jabbar and Saul Lehrfreund have been nominated for appointment to the House of Lords.
The two Co-Executive Directors of the DPRU’s main partner organisation the Death Penalty Project (DPP) were included in the list of 26 nominees for life Peerages published by the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday 16 July.
Parvais and Saul began the work of the DPP during the 1990s, and have worked for the abolition and progressive restriction of the death penalty worldwide for more than thirty years, using a range of strategies including litigation, advocacy and research.
Since the founding of the DPRU in 2020, both have played an integral role in the DPRU and DPP’s collaborative research projects. In addition, Parvais is a Visiting Professor of Practice in the Oxford Centre for Criminology, where he teaches a module on the death penalty on the MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice together with Professor Hoyle.
Commenting on the announcement, Professor Hoyle said: “These nominations are a very welcome recognition of Saul and Parvais’ significant achievements in challenging death penalty laws worldwide over the last three decades. Their legal expertise and experience of international political engagement will no doubt allow them to make a valuable contribution to public life through their service in the House of Lords.”
