Professor David Sugarman Wins SLSA Annual Prize for Contributions to the Socio-Legal Community

The Centre for Socio-Legal Studies is delighted to congratulate Professor David Sugarman, Senior Associate at the CSLS, on being awarded the 2025 Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA) Prize for Contributions to the Socio-Legal Community.
This prestigious award recognises individuals who have made an exceptional and enduring contribution to socio-legal studies. The SLSA Board highlighted Professor Sugarman’s long-standing impact as a scholar, teacher, mentor, and leader within the field.
Professor Sugarman is widely recognised for his diverse and influential body of work and for his pioneering role in modern socio-legal historical studies. His scholarship spans legal history, legal education, legal life-writing, company law, gender equality, law and literature, and the legal profession, shaping how scholars understand law within its wider social, political, and economic contexts.
He is also well known for his work relating to the Pinochet case, reflecting his longstanding commitment to human rights and public engagement.
Professor Fernanda Pirie, Director of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, expressed the Centre’s delight at the news and noted the significant contribution Professor Sugarman has made to strengthening and enriching the socio-legal community.
