Professor Ian Loader (Oxford University), Dr Evi Girling (Keele University – Principal Investigator), Professor Richard Sparks (Edinburgh University) and Professor Ben Bradford (University College London) have been awarded a grant from the ESRC for an ambitious three year programme of research examining Place, Crime and Insecurity in Everyday Life: A contemporary study of an English town. The project commenced in November 2019 and will run to 1st February 2023. This project will provide a new exploration of the place and meanings of security in the everyday lives of people living in Britain today through an intensive local study of one English town in Cheshire, details about the project can be found on the website, https://securityinplace.org/
We are inviting for applications for a Researcher to join our research team. We are seeking applicants with a strong background in a relevant social science (e.g. Sociology, Anthropology, Human Geography etc.) and with experience of and aptitude in digital ethnographic methods.
The Researcher will manage their own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines, taking the lead on the conduct of primary and secondary analysis of social media data, and preparing data for archiving; conduct of digital ethnographic research activities and manage the project’s social media accounts; adapt existing and develop new research methodologies and materials and work with the team to contribute to design, planning and conduct of qualitative interviews on use of social media and participant recruitment and organisation of interviews, focus groups and deliberative/consensus events; analyse qualitative and/or quantitative social media data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining theories as appropriate and contribute ideas for new research projects
The Researcher should hold or currently be studying for a relevant PhD/Dphil, together with relevant experience, in a related social science subject (Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology or Human Geography); possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes and have experience of conducting digital ethnography/research on social media and in the collection and analysis of online data; the ability to manage own academic research and associated activities and to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team and previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations
The post is part time (0.5 FTE or 18.75 hours per week) and commences on 1 July 2022. The post is fixed term until 31 January 2023.
The research fellow will be based in the Centre for Criminology at Oxford, line managed by Professor Ian Loader. Some travel to Macclesfield will be expected throughout the duration of the post.
