Postdoctoral Research Associate in Legal Regulation for Sustainable Plastics

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in public international law, environmental law and regulation to work under the supervision of Professor Catherine Redgwell and funded by an Oxford Martin School grant (The Future of Plastics). The project involves research and team-work within a multi-disciplinary collaboration examining economic, life cycle and legal aspects of implementing new sustainable plastics. The appointed person will work with postdoctoral researchers on the same grant working in the Smith school of Economics and the Environment and Chemistry. This project’s objectives are to understand the options to improve sustainability for plastics and to propose pathways to change within this sector.
The legal component of the project will examine the role of law in supporting the adoption of plastics that reduce or eliminate plastics waste/pollution (pollution flows/end of cycle) and to promote plastics manufacturing options that eliminate or reduce risk of environmental harms, and to propose a toolbox of regulatory and ‘soft law’ methods for achieving these goals. It will integrate the international dimension, in particular the waste management and marine pollution regimes regionally and internationally.
The postholder will manage their own academic research and administrative activities, which will require the co-ordinatation of multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines; analyse qualitative and quantitative data from a variety of national and international legal sources, reviewing and refining working theories as appropriate; present detailed research proposals and results to senior researchers; collaborate with economists and chemists working on the project, including in the production of joint research publications; publish research results at international conferences and in high impact peer reviewed journals; produce presentations and reports to meet stakeholder requirements; proactively interact with the project team, attending all meetings and providing support in any way required.
Candidates should hold or be nearing the completion of, a relevant PhD/DPhil,together with relevant experience; possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes; possess expertise in public international law and environmental regulation; have the ability to manage their own academic research and associated activities; previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations and the ability to contribute ideas for new research projects.Experience of independently managing a discrete area of a research project and actively collaborating in the development of research articles for publication is desirable.
This post is full time and fixed-term for 24 months and will be based at the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, St Cross Building, St Cross Road, Oxford, OX1 3UL.
