Research Officer, Centre for Socio-Legal Studies (Online Trials & Digital Poverty)

Professor Linda Mulcahy is looking for a research officer to help with some preparatory work that needs to be done for a research grant application on access to justice and digital poverty.  This work draws on research being undertaken at the Centre for Socio-legal Studies on online trials and hearings which is being funded by the ESRC.  The person appointed would be expected to:

  • Undertake a literature review on the concept of digital poverty which covers resources in law and the social sciences;
  • Contribute to a draft paper on access to justice, digital poverty and online justice;
  • Provide support to Professor Mulcahy in setting up a series of meetings with policy makers and stakeholders with a view to establishing a research partnership;
  • Help prepare presentations about the research

Duration and hours
Total number of hours of work available: 450

This is a casual engagement which is strictly limited to three months, although the working hours are flexible.  The total number of hours of work available equates to 37.5 per week.

Start date: 2 May 2022

Date by which the work must be completed: 24 July 2022

Reporting
The Research Assistant will report to Linda Mulcahy.

Requirements

  • A good understanding of, and interest in, socio-legal studies is essential
  • A good understanding of social science research methods and ability to evaluate the quality of research publications and data
  • A demonstrable interest in issues around access to justice and digital poverty
  • The ability to write clearly, substantiate arguments and structure work is essential;
  • Good communication skills in interacting with people outside of the academy are desirable
  • Excellent organisational and IT skills are an essential requirement

Eligibility
This position is best suited to recent graduate research students and post-doctoral researchers in the Law Faculty, including its Centres, but is not compatible with full- or part-time study. It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.

Rate of Pay
12 weeks or less (casual engagement): This will be paid at the rate of £19.79 per hour (based on Grade 7 point 6) plus holiday pay of £2.39 per hour worked (= total of £22.18/hour).
