Research Assistant, Climate Change Litigation against Corporations

Dr Ekaterina Aristova is looking for a research assistant to help with the Leverhulme-funded project on climate change litigation against corporations. The Research Assistant will assist with mapping relevant case law using databases that keep a record of climate change lawsuits and searching for primary documents (e.g., particulars of claims, judgments, etc). The study is not limited to a particular jurisdiction and will involve research in both common law and civil law legal systems. The nature of the project is such that it is likely to appeal in particular to those interested in climate change studies; strategic litigation; business and human rights; comparative law.

Total number of hours of work available: 96

Start Date: ASAP

Date by which the work must be completed: 31 August 2022, or 12 weeks after commencement of position (whichever is earlier).

The Research Assistant will report to Dr Ekaterina Aristova.

Requirements

  • Strong research skills
  • Experience in doctrinal research and analysis of case law is desirable
  • Experience or research in climate litigation or strategic litigation in business and human rights field is an asset
  • Ability to manage own research and administrative activities
  • Good communication skills
  • Good admin, IT and social media skills are essential
  • The work can be done in any place where you have good access to Internet and electronic resources.

Eligibility
This position is open to current graduate students in the Law Faculty and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students in the Faculty. It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.

Rate of Pay
This will be paid at the standard research assistant rate of £15.60 per hour (based on Grade 6 point 1)  plus holiday pay of £1.88 per hour worked (= total of £17.48/hour). Holiday pay will be paid in the month in which is accrued.

Funding
This position is funded by a Leverhulme Trust postdoctoral fellowship.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Work must not commence without a letter of engagement or variable hours contract and a right to work check having been carried out by the Faculty Personnel Officer.

Full time graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year.

Students may not work as Research Assistants for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.
