Research Assistant: COVID-19, public policy and commercial law

Kristin van Zwieten is looking to appoint one fixed-term, variable hours research assistant to work on her project with Horst Eidenmüller and Oren Sussman, ‘COVID-19, public policy and commercial law’, which has been funded by the University of Oxford’s COVID-19 Research Response Fund. The project aims to track, report and critically evaluate interventions made by governments around the world to enable viable businesses to survive the COVID-19 economic crisis. It has included a large-scale data collection effort across multiple jurisdictions.

The research assistant would be appointed to work until the conclusion of project funding, on 31 July 2022.

Tasks:
The RA would:

  • assist Professor van Zwieten with finalising the coding of country-level data, using the methodology already developed by the project team (note that statistical skills are not required to do this work);
  • assist with the organisation of a project-related conference that will take place later this year;
  • carry out research, including literature reviews, to support a number of papers coming out of the project.

Total number of hours available: 144

Start date: as soon as possible.

Date by which the work must be completed: 31 July 2022.

Reporting
The Research Assistant will report to Kristin van Zwieten.

Selection criteria

  • An excellent undergraduate degree in law is essential, a postgraduate qualification in law is highly desirable;
  • Some familiarity with business/commercial law is essential, though this need not be English commercial law;
  • Excellent legal research skills are essential;
  • Close attention to detail is essential;
  • Excellent administration and communication skills are essential;
  • An understanding of comparative law methods is desirable;
  • Some familiarity with leximetric methods is desirable;
  • A second language is desirable.

Eligibility
This position is open to current graduate research students in the Law Faculty and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students. It is expected that the work will be done in the UK.

Rate of Pay
The work will be paid at the standard research assistant rate of £15.60 per hour (based on Grade 6 point 1) plus holiday pay of £2.67 per hour worked (= total of £18.27/hour).

This position is funded by the University’s COVID-19 Response Fund, project code BRD00230.

Graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year.

Approval of the Associate Dean for Research Students is required for any graduate student to work for their supervisor.
