The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights is looking for a research assistant to help with the project on civil liability for human rights violations (“Project”). The Project is funded by the Oak Foundation and involves a comparative study of civil liability of state and non-state actors for specified categories of human rights abuses across several jurisdictions in the Global South and Global North. The Project is led by Professor Kate O’Regan and Dr Annelen Micus and is coordinated by Dr Ekaterina Aristova. The Research Assistant will contribute to the Project in several ways and help with: (i) the preparation of the research outputs including editorial, research and cite-checking support; (ii) the creation of media content (blogs, podcasts, webinars); and (iii) the organisation and management of the events, both online and when the public health crisis permits, in person. The nature of the Project is such that it is likely to appeal in particular to those interested in tort law; human rights law; business and human rights; comparative law.
Duration and hours
The work is for a maximum of 300 hours to start immediately, and will run until 31 December 2021.
You will not be required to work for more than 8 hours in any given week, which is the maximum allowed in the Law Faculty for graduate research students.
The Research Assistant will report to Dr Ekaterina Aristova.
- Interest in and specialist knowledge within the broad field of human rights law is essential;
- Familiarity with the basic literature on and a reasonable understanding of the civil liability for human rights violations is desirable;
- Experience or research in tort law or the law of delict is an asset;
- Ability to manage own research and administrative activities;
- Excellent writing, editing and proof-reading skills;
- Demonstrable social media, communications and IT skills;
- The capacity to work well in a team.
This position is open to current graduate research students in the Law Faculty and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students. It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.
Rate of Pay
More than 12 weeks (variable hours contract): This will be paid at the standard research assistant rate of £15.37 per hour (based on Grade 6 point 1) plus holiday pay of £2.63 per hour worked (= total of £18.00/hour).
