Research Assistant, Mis-/Dis-information & Hate Speech

Nicole Stremlau is looking for 1 research assistant to help with research and development of a course around mis/disinformation and hate speech online. The research assistant will be required to support ongoing research around this theme, particularly as it relates to issues of internet shutdowns in Africa. The research assistant will help with the preparation of papers, literature reviews, the development of resource materials, and the preparation of a funding application.
Duration and hours
Total number of hours of work available: 96
Maximum number of hours of work per week (or explain variable arrangements): 8 hours per week
Start date: March 4th 2022 earliest
Date by which the work must be completed: May 15th, 2022, or 12 weeks after start date

The Research Assistant will report to Nicole Stremlau
Requirements
- A current PhD student in law or media/internet studies.
- A general understanding of the field of mis/disinformation and online hate speech is essential
- Knowledge of these issues from a legal and policy perspective in the global south would be helpful.
- Experience organizing courses or trainings for lawyers and people in government would be helpful.
- A knowledge of other research programmes and organizations working in this field would be helpful.
- This post requires excellent writing and research skills, and access to online search tools and a law library.
- Good admin and IT skills are essential.
- The work can be done in any place where you have access to a good library, but you must be able to travel to Oxford for occasional meetings.
Eligibility
This position is open to current graduate research students at Oxford or at universities in the UK. Faculty/Department and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students. It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.
Rate of Pay
This will be paid at the standard research assistant rate of £15.60 per hour (based on Grade 6 point 1) plus holiday pay of £1.88 per hour worked (= total of £17.48/hour).
Funding
This position is funded by a research grant from the European Research Council.
