Research Officer, Centre for Socio-Legal Studies (Online Speech & Offline Violence in Africa)

Dr Nicole Stremlau is looking for a research officer to help with a project examining research around online speech and offline violence in Africa. The RA will assist with analyzing interviews and contribute to the writing of academic articles, particularly around internet shutdowns as a response to such concerns.  In addition, the RA will work with the PI on funding applications and impact projects on how to address online speech and offline harms within a human rights framework.

Duration and hours
Total number of hours of work available: 412.5

This is a casual engagement which is strictly limited to 11 weeks, although the working hours are flexible.  The total number of hours of work available equates to 37.5 per week.

Start date: 16 May 2022

Date by which the work must be completed: 31 July 2022

Reporting
The Research Officer will report to Dr Nicole Stremlau.

Requirements

  • A general understanding of the field of online hate speech and conflict is essential
  • A good working background knowledge of African politics and society is essential
  • A good understanding of the funding landscape and possible grant opportunities for media, law and the global south is desirable.
  • Experience putting together research grants for funding is essential.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to analyse interview data is essential.
  • Good admin and IT skills are essential.
  • The work can be done in any place where you have access to a good library, but you must be able to travel to Oxford for occasional meetings during the summer break.

Eligibility
This position is best suited to recent graduate research students and post-doctoral researchers in the Law Faculty, including its Centres, but is not compatible with full- or part-time study. It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.

Rate of Pay
12 weeks or less (casual engagement): This will be paid at the rate of £18.67 per hour (based on Grade 7 point 4) plus holiday pay of £2.27 per hour worked (= total of £20.94/hour). 

Funding
This position is funded by the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies.
