How we promote Equality & Diversity

Some areas of difference are immediately visible, but others, such as disability, are often hidden. Some members of staff and students in the department are living with a disability or long-term health condition, even though they may not use this language to describe themselves. That may include people living with chronic conditions such as diabetes or arthritis, musculoskeletal issues, mental health issues or specific learning differences such as dyslexia.

The department is committed to supporting members of staff and students living with a disability or long-term health condition. We encourage people to discuss any need they may have for ‘reasonable adjustments’ or any other support. Advice is available within the University: for students from the Disability Advisory Service, and for staff from the Staff Disability Advisor and the Occupational Health Service.

The Faculty of Law takes its commitments of advancing and promoting gender equality seriously. We were one of the first law faculties in the UK to be awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze Certificate and to sign up to a progressive charter, striving to adopt its principles in everything we do. The University has an active LGBT+ Staff Network, providing social and work-related networking opportunities, and growing networks of LGBT+ Role Models and Allies. In ensuring that ‘an inclusive culture which promotes equality [and] values diversity’ is fostered, the Faculty installed a Race Equality Co-ordinator post in 2017. The role of the Race Equality Co-ordinator was to promote awareness of diversity and equality race issues within the Faculty and to advise the Faculty on these matters. The following three initiatives undertaken by the Co-ordinator are worth special mention:

  • Diversifying the Curriculum Workshop: In May 2019, a workshop on ‘Diversifying the Curriculum’ was organised at the Faculty. Various conceptualisations of ‘diversifying the curriculum’ were discussed and experiences from colleagues from other faculties and universities where curriculum re-designing has taken place were shared. A debate about the potentials and obstacles for the Oxford Faculty of Law also followed, resulting in concrete suggestions as to how to rethink the law curriculum.
  • Decolonising the Law Discussion Group: To create a forum for debates on decolonisation and the law more specifically, the Decolonising the Law discussion group was created in Trinity Term 2019. The Group meets termly and welcomes speakers from all disciplines and career-levels to present research on interlinks between de-colonisation and the law.
  • AfOx Law Fellowship: To support a broad network of Visiting Academics, the Faculty has partnered with the Africa Oxford Initiative and various Oxford colleges to create the AfOx Law Fellowship. The Fellowship invites academics holding a full-time position in an African institution, to spend time in Oxford to make use of the Faculty’s research facilities and carry out research.

Since Michaelmas Term 2020, the role of the Race Equality Co-ordinator has been passed on to the new Associate Dean for Equality and Diversity.
