Speaker(s)
Catharine MacKinnon and the Butterfly Effect

Can small actions produce large and complex effects? What is the relevance of this theory for feminist jurisprudence and womxn's rights activism?

The Feminist Jurisprudence Discussion Group will ask these questions and more as we consider the work of eminent feminist legal scholar Catharine MacKinnon and her theory of the “butterfly effect.” We are happy to announce our first social event this term for 7.30pm on Monday 16th November.

In this short (6 min) and compact video, MacKinnon argues that seemingly minor interventions in the legal realm can have a “butterfly effect” that generates major social and cultural transformations. Sometimes one case or one word in legislation can have a huge impact.

We will start the event and welcome everyone. We then all watch the video 'together'. After having watched the video, we reconvene and want to discuss whether the “butterfly effect” has proved true in our local jurisdictions and if not how we could best pursue it.

As MacKinnon says, “Equality seekers spread your wings- you are stronger than you know!” We look forward to having insightful and thought-provoking discussions.
