“Regulating for Competitiveness”: Perspectives from Tax, Banking & Employment Law

Join three scholars with expertise in Chinese tax law, banking & corporate law, and employment law for a fireside chat on the role of ‘competitiveness’ in various areas of regulation.  We probe into two main questions in the Chinese context. First, what does ‘increasing competitiveness’ mean as a policy objective? Second, how does the phenomenon of ‘regulatory competition’ play out in the different fields of law?

Speakers

Yue “Daisy” Dai is an Assistant Professor of Law at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and a New York State Attorney. Currently, Daisy is a senior academic visitor in Oxford, Faculty of Law. She has several papers published in Chinese tax journals and the Tax Notes. In 2016, Daisy won the first prize in the Donald Alexander Tax Law Writing Competition organized by the Federal Bar Association in the US. Daisy earned J.D. from University of Illinois, College of Law, and B.A. from University of Virginia. Daisy worked in big law firms, the US Federal District Court and the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs before.  

Jacob Schumacher is the Teaching Fellow in Finance at Saïd Business School. Jacob’s areas of expertise include finance, economics and financial law. His research interests include financial economics, multinational enterprises and the Chinese financial system.  Jacob read International Relations, Japanese, and Economics at the University of the Pacific then an MA in International Law and an MSc in Finance and Financial Law from SOAS, University of London. He stayed at SOAS to complete a PhD in Finance and Management focusing on quantitatively assessing the effects of FDI on domestic banks in China’s banking sector.

Mimi Zou is the Fangda Career Development Fellow in Chinese Commercial Law at St Hugh’s College in affiliation with the Faculty of Law and China Centre, University of Oxford. Mimi’s research focuses on Chinese and comparative employment and contract law. Prior to her appointment at Oxford, she was Edwards Fellow at Columbia Law School and Assistant Professor of Law at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Mimi completed her DPhil at St John’s College and her BCL at Christ Church, Oxford. She has over 15 years of experience working in law firms, international organisations, and government departments in Australia, Hong Kong, China, Netherlands, and the UK.
