Overview:
The right to self-determination has been evolving and developing in the course of the last 100 years. The completion of UN decolonisation and questions of secession from parent countries continue to be topical and often controversial.

This meeting discusses what international law has to say about recent, contested claims to statehood and the application of the right to self-determination today.

The speakers bring their own expertise to bear: Dr Drew is co-director of the Centre for the study of Colonialism, Empire and International Law at SOAS; Ms Robinson advises the United Liberation Movement for West Papua in relation to its self-determination claims from Indonesia; Professor Weller has advised in many of the world’s recent cases of self-determination, including Kosovo, Sudan and the Catalan government.

This event is co-hosted by Doughty Street Chambers and Chatham House.
