Women, Peace and Security: What does it Mean in the Contemporary World?

The lecture will describe the UN Security Council’s agenda on Women, Peace and Security that it has developed since its adoption of the ground-breaking resolution 1325 in 2000, its substance and place in international law. It will ask what needs to be done to turn rhetoric to practice.
 
 
Christine Chinkin, FBA,C MG,  is the Director of the Centre for Women, Peace and Security at the London School of Economics,  a William W. Cook Global Law Professor at the University of Michigan and a member of the Bar of England and Wales and Matrix Chambers. She was previously Professor of International Law at the LSE. She is the author of many articles on international law and human rights law, in particular on the human rights of women. She is co-author of The Boundaries of International Law: a Feminist Analysis (MUP, 2000, with Hilary Charlesworth), The Making of International Law (OUP, 2007, with Alan Boyle) and of International Law and New Wars (CUP, 2017 with Mary Kaldor).

The PIL Discussion Group hosts a weekly speaker event and light lunch and is a key focal point for PIL@Oxford. Topics involve contemporary and challenging issues in international law. Speakers include distinguished international law practitioners, academics, and legal advisers from around the world.
 
The group typically meets each Thursday during Oxford terms in The Old Library, All Souls College, with lunch commencing at 12:30. The speaker will commence at 12:45 and speak for about forty minutes, allowing about twenty five minutes for questions and discussion. The meeting should conclude before 2:00. Practitioners, academics and students from within and outside the University of Oxford are all welcome. No RSVP is necessary.
