Freshfields ExpLaw Summer Programme Ambassadors x 5

The Law Admissions and Outreach Officer, Emma White, is looking for 5 ExpLaw Ambassadors for the 2-day residential Freshfields ExpLaw Summer programme.  Each Ambassador will work 1st August and 2nd August during the day and will also be on call during the nights of 31st July or 1st August.

The Freshfields Oxford ExpLaw Summer School is organised by the Faculty of Law and is supported by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. The aim of the Summer School is to provide academically talented students from UK state schools with the opportunity to experience the University of Oxford and learn about the study of Law. Participants have been selected according to academic merit and a variety of socio-economic factors. During the 2-day Summer School, participants will take part in a range of legal lectures and discussions, information talks about admissions and studying law at Oxford, and visits to a range of Oxford colleges. A social activity will also be provided on the evening of 1st August.

Description of the ExpLaw Ambassador role

The role of the ExpLaw Ambassador is to greet, help and support the Summer School participants during their stay in Oxford.  Please note that the role can also include being on call at night, as well as evening duties to greet early arrivals at St Hilda’s College.  On 1st August evening shift Ambassadors will meet the main cohort of participants at a pre-arranged time and location to welcome them to the Summer School and facilitate introductions.

In more detail, the role will include:

  1. Act as a positive role model to prospective students of the University.
  2. Communicate effectively and clearly to participants and to staff, in a professional manner at all times, reflecting guidance provided in training.
  3. Act in a pastoral role to participants, providing support and guidance about the University and the summer school.
  4. Accompany students on all summer school events (both academic and social) and meals.
  5. Act as initial contact for any overnight issues that participants experience. To either deal with these issues or elevate to accommodation lodge staff.
  6. Monitor student behaviour overnight- e.g. by ensuring students go to bed at a reasonable time and to intervene in instances of excessive noise.
  7. Follow Health and Safety, Risk Assessment and Safeguarding Children procedures (which will be part of training) and record and report incidents appropriately.
  8. Be reliable and punctual. To arrive to each event within the summer school in good time and to ensure punctuality of summer school participants where appropriate.
  9. Manage behaviour and encourage engagement of summer school participants. To pass any concerns about behaviour or engagement on to Law Faculty Staff.
  10. Keep confidential information about participants secure at all times.
  11. Attend all training required for the position- payment for training is included in gross salary.
  12. Perform all other duties as requested by Law Faculty staff.

Reporting

All Ambassadors will report to Emma White, Admissions and Outreach Officer.

Duration and hours

The main Freshfields ExpLaw Summer Programme will take place on 1st & 2nd August, with ‘Early Birds’ arriving at St Hilda’s College the evening of 31st July.

Working Hours

 

Monday 31st July 2023

5pm - 11pm

2 Ambassadors on evening duty only, greet early arrivals.

Tuesday 1st August 2023

8am – 10pm

5 Ambassadors throughout day, 3 with evening duties

Wednesday 2nd August

8am – 4pm

5 Ambassadors throughout day

Plus ‘on call’ night staff duties on one or more of the following nights: 31st July/ 1st August

Ambassadors available on call from 10pm – 8am

 

Summary of hours:

2 Ambassadors working 31st July – 2nd Aug = 21 hrs

3 Ambassadors working 1st Aug – 2nd Aug = 15 hrs

Plus any hours worked when ‘on call’

Accommodation / Food / Expenses

All student ambassadors will be provided with free accommodation at St Hilda’s College on the night of Tuesday 1st August. The two Ambassadors providing night duties will also receive free accommodation on the additional night worked on 31st July.

All meals will be provided and will be taken with summer school participants.

The Faculty of Law will reimburse ambassadors for reasonable travel expenses to and from the summer school if not located in Oxford. Ambassadors should purchase their own tickets and will be required to claim reimbursement using eExpenses. Ambassadors should make use of any practical measures which reduce ticket price, for example advance booking and use of a 16-25 railcard (if applicable).

Person Specification

Your application should explain how you satisfy most, if not all, of the following essential criteria:

  1. Currently studying for a degree at the University of Oxford, Faculty of Law. (This includes third and fourth years who will have completed their degree by July.)
  2. Proven interest in access work.
  3. Experience working with young people.
  4. Confident verbal communicator.
  5. Well organised and punctual.
  6. Practical problem solving skills.
  7. Demonstrable capacity to work effectively in a team.
  8. Ability to represent the University of Oxford and to give advice on applications, admissions and student life in an encouraging and helpful manner.
  9. Physical and emotional resilience to cope with challenges and pressures of a residential programme.
  10. Completed Safeguarding training, or willing to undertake online training (OSCB)
  11. Experience of the LNAT and answering student Q&As

And the following desirable criteria:

  1. Experience working in an ambassadorial/outreach role for the University or one if its colleges or departments.
  2. Experience working at or participating in a residential programme.
  3. Former participant of an access programme such as the UNIQ summer schools or Pathways to Law.
  4. Experience supporting young people in a welfare role, dealing with issues such as nervousness and homesickness.
  5. First Aid trained

Eligibility

A current undergraduate or post-graduate Oxford Law student.

We require a gender balance for safeguarding reasons.

Rate of Pay

The position is paid at Grade 3.1 on the casual pay spine (£12.12) per hour worked. Please note there will be breaks during the hours above which will not be salaried.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

You will be paid through the University payroll office and the payment will be made directly into your bank account.
