Graduate Mooting Assistants (x2)

The Faculty is seeking to appoint two Graduate Mooting Assistants for the 2023/2024 academic year. The work would be ideal for an MPhil or early to mid-stage DPhil student (i.e. with at least one year of study remaining in October 2023) with a strong interest in mooting. 

The responsibilities of the Graduate Mooting Assistants will include:

  • assisting with the organisation of the various internal moots, such as the Herbert Smith Freehills Disability Moot, the Maitland Chambers (Undergraduate Cuppers) Competition, and the Blackstone Chambers Postgraduate Cuppers competition;
  • co-ordinating, in conjunction with the coaches, Oxford’s participation in certain external moots, such as the Jessup;
  • answering queries from students and staff about the Oxford Mooting Programme; and
  • maintaining the mooting webpage and preparing stories for Law News.

Duration and hours

Working hours: up to 195 hours per Graduate Mooting Assistant across the duration of the project

Start date: 9 October 2023

Date by which the work must be completed: 31 July 2024

Reporting

The coaches will report to Dr Thomas Krebs, Law Faculty Mooting Officer

Requirements:

  • Prior mooting experience is highly desirable. 
  • Good admin and IT skills are essential. 
  • Experience of using Drupal or other website content management systems is desirable (training can be provided)
  • Whilst much of the work can be carried out online, the Graduate Mooting Assistants will be required to be present in-person in Oxford for some of their mooting-related duties.
  • Meetings with the Mooting Officers may be held either in-person in Oxford or online. 

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to current graduate students in the Faculty of Law and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students within the Law Faculty

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.

 

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £17.03 per hour, which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Work must not commence without a letter of engagement or variable hours contract and a right to work check having been carried out by the Faculty Personnel Officer.

Graduate student engagement opportunities in the Faculty of Law usually fall into one of three categories: Research AssistantGraduate Teaching Assistant; or Blog Editor

Full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year, regardless of the type of work.

Students may not work for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.
