Head of Research (Deputy Head of Administration and Finance)
Grade 9: £52,815 - £61,198 per annum
The Faculty of Law is seeking to appoint a Head of Research (Deputy Head of Administration and Finance). This exciting new position will provide strategic, administrative and operational leadership for all aspects of research support in the Law Faculty, in co-operation with the Dean, Associate Deans, and as deputy to the Head of Administration and Finance (‘HoAF’). This new post arises from a recent review of the Faculty’s research activity, and reflects the Faculty’s ambition for diversification, expansion and improvement. Reporting directly to the Head of Administration and Finance (HoAF), and working closely with the Associate Dean for Research (as well as the REF Co-ordinator when applicable), the Head of Research will be responsible for the delivery of the Faculty’s research planning and strategy; the development and delivery of policy; the diversification and expansion of the Faculty’s research income (currently around £2m per annum); the management and direction of a team of professional support staff; and will have direct responsibility for a portion of the Faculty’s grant applications and awards.
As Deputy to the HoAF, the postholder will assume full responsibility for all research-related administration; and will deputise for the HoAF on matters relating to HR, finance, safety and compliance, insofar as they pertain to research activities; and may also be asked to deputise for the HoAF more generally when necessary.
The successful applicant should have experience of research functions and processes, including grant applications, contracts, project finances, and all related HR policy and legislation; thorough understanding of the research funding landscape and the requirements of funders applicable to Law, and the ability to identify and develop new funding opportunities with academic colleagues; educated to degree level or equivalent, and proven technical skills to manage finance and other data; managerial and team leadership experience at a senior level; proven ability to gain the confidence of, and to influence, staff at every level, and to advise senior leaders and strong communication skills with a proven ability to understand the information needs of others. Significant strategic leadership experience within a large and complex organisation, with a highly-developed knowledge of research management principles and practice and other Higher Education or relevant Public Sector experience is desirable. The position is permanent (subject to a probationary period) and full time. The postholder will be based in the Faculty of Law, St Cross Building, St Cross Road, Oxford, OX1 3UL.
