How are you finding the Summer School?

It’s a transformative experience. It’s making me unlearn and relearn, and making me question and challenge myself every step of the way.

What subjects are you studying on the course?

Basic principles, jurisdictions across different continents. As an Indian I’m trying to put forward my experience from my country. I really like the fact that every region has its own unique juridico-political contexts which makes their interpretation different – in certain spaces their interpretation is much wider and extensive.

What I’ve found really interesting so far is my optional elective on refuges and international human rights law. I’m really enjoying the classes and the reading I’m doing.

I’ve read more in detail in economics, social, and cultural rights and I really liked some of the hypothesis we worked on. We had an exercise on animal law and the intersect with the right to family life – that was really fun.

What have you enjoyed most about your time in Oxford so far?

I’ve noticed it’s a city for students. Everyone is friendly and approachable. I’ve found that the cross-cultural communication is one of the best things about Oxford.

Key Takeaways:

Although I studied international human rights law in an online course before coming here and although it was very informative, the level of discussion we have here- the opportunity to share opinion and experiences, that’s really enlightened me. There’s much more opportunity to sit down and talk.

Also, the importance of keeping an open mind – I’ve been constantly unlearning and relearning.

And to read and read as much as you can and listen to everyone’s stories.

Any advice for anyone considering the Summer School?

Make it a point to talk to as many people as you can as possible – because you can learn so much- you never know what you might learn or what opportunities might open up for you. Oxford presents you with a lot of life changing opportunities.

Even though I’m just a law student and have so much more to do. What you are learning about in theory, you should learn about in practice. Having worked on the ground with communities or with grassroots organizations it really gives you a taste of how human rights litigation works in practice because that’s the experience they are looking for.

Make it a point to talk to as many people as you can as possible - you never know what you might learn or what opportunities arise. Oxford presents you with a lot of life changing opportunities.
