The Death Penalty Project (DPP) offers a number of formal internship programmes for students and graduates who are interested in working in the human rights legal sector, and in particular, issues concerning the use of the death penalty within the criminal justice system. We have on-going internship programmes with Yale University and the Irish Centre for Human Rights at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
We will be able to offer one four-week internship to students at Oxford University during the Easter and summer holidays. The exact dates of the internship will be determined with each individual candidate. The internship will be on a full-time basis at the DPP’s offices in London.
Whilst the internship is an unpaid position, a small travel stipend will be provided.
Objectives of the programme
The Internship is designed to provide a unique experience in the non-profit legal sector in the UK. He/she will gain invaluable exposure to the workings of a pioneering legal NGO which specialises in death penalty litigation. First-hand experience in litigation before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and international human rights tribunals will be gained.
Interns will also gain exposure to strategic planning for programme and organisational development, methodologies for addressing human rights problems, perspectives in conceptualising legal reform and rule of law development. Overall, it is hoped that the Internship will provide an insight to the field of human rights work from a practical perspective.
General Description of the Work
Interns will be involved in a variety of work to support the Executive Directors and staff in providing legal assistance to prisoners on death row. This includes, inter alia, assisting in the preparation of legal documents and casework, analysing international human rights jurisprudence and conducting research about specific issues of law. Interns will also assist in general administrative tasks.
The internship is particularly suited to those who are considering a career in human rights.
