'Conflicting trends': global struggle for media freedom in the spotlight

Nicole Stremlau, Principal Investigator of ConflictNet, talks about conflicting trends in freedom of expression across the world in the latest edition of Lid Is On podcast by UN News.

UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO has published the latest edition of a flagship study, World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development in March 2018.

The new volume offers a critical analysis of new trends in media freedom, pluralism, independence and the safety of journalists. Nicole Stremlau is one of the lead authors of this report. The study was a major undertaking, charting recent trends in global media and communications, including the rise in algorithmic pluralism, the increasing polarization of the public sphere, growing inequalities, and the role played by private spaces for expression (such as social media platforms) in shaping public debates.
