The Grand Final of the University of Oxford Maitland Chambers Inter-Collegiate mooting competition (Cuppers) 2019, between Pembroke and Harris Manchester took place at Keble College on Thursday, 21 February 2019.
The moot problem for this year’s Grand Final involved a notional appeal, on two grounds, from the actual decision of the Court of Appeal in Various Claimants v Giambrone & Law (a firm) ( EWCA Civ 1193; PNLR 2).
The mooters made innovative arguments on an actual case that presented significant difficulties. As acknowledged by the bench, the standard of mooting was exceptionally high, and the mooters responded to questions effortlessly. The Grand Final was judged by Edwin Johnson QC, Michael Gibbon QC and Benjamin John, barristers at Maitland Chambers. Mr. Johnson QC delivered at the end of the round a full judgment on the merits of the case and all four finalists were commended on the sophistication of their arguments and clarity of manner.
Pembroke College (Appelants) was represented by Mr Tilman Koops and Ms Alice Campbell Davis and Harris Manchester College (Respondents) was represented by Mr Jordan Briggs and Mr Timothy Foot.
The winners of this challenging Grand Final were the Applicants, Pembroke College.
