We are pleased to announce that one of the teams representing the University of Oxford has won the University of Southampton National Inter-Varsity Moot 2021. The team consisted of Olivia Railton (BA Law, Wadham College) and Joe Pitaluga (MPhil International Relations, New College).

The Southampton Inter-Varsity National Moot takes place annually and consists of two parts: the National Heats, and the Semi and Grand Finals. After achieving the highest score in the National Heats on 28 March 2021 (out of the 32 participating teams), Joe and Olivia progressed to the Semi and Grand Finals - where a challenging mesothelioma case lay in wait.

Joe and Olivia initially faced off against Royal Holloway, University of London, in the Semi Finals on 10 April 2021. After sustaining significant and challenging interventions from the three judges (all of whom were practicing barristers), they progressed to the Grand Final later that day. There, their submissions were tested and judged by experienced practitioners, including a current member of the judiciary. Both teams were congratulated and praised on the quality of their advocacy, but Oxford carried the day.

We are delighted to hear of our student’s success, and congratulate all who were involved.
