Opportunity Oxford Graduate Teachers x6

Deadline: midday Monday 3 June

Imogen Goold, Access & Outreach Co-ordinator, and Kathryn Sandilands, Opportunity Oxford Co-Ordinator, are looking to engage up to six graduate students to support, and teach on, the Opportunity Oxford Law Programme and Oxford Law Springboard bridging programme from July to September 2024.

Opportunity Oxford is a University scheme that provides offer-holders from disadvantaged backgrounds with some additional teaching over the summer holidays with the aim of giving them a "flying start" to their Oxford law degrees in Michaelmas Term.  We are looking for graduate students with the ability to teach in the areas of Roman, Constitutional or Criminal Law. Experience of teaching in these subjects is desirable but not essential, as is completion of the ‘Preparation for Teaching and Learning at Oxford’ course.  Oxford Law Springboard is a separate Law Faculty initiative designed to make our bridging programme available to wider number of students whose studies may have been adversely affected.

Duties of Graduate Teachers will include: giving tutorials, holding Q&A sessions with students, marking and giving feedback on online course exercises and on tutorial essays.  For graduate students working in Roman Law duties, will also extend to organising a moot. The work is partly online, and partly in person in Oxford.

Duration and hours

We will need you to start work on the 17 June 2024 to complete some online training sessions in advance.

The distance learning will run from 1 July to 9 August 2024 and participating students will be required to complete 75 hours over the 6-week period.  Students will be asked to complete a number of short online activities intended to enhance introduce them to legal materials such as cases and legislation.

The residential will run from 7 – 21 September 2024 and will be full-time for the Opportunity Oxford participants. The teaching for this part of the programme will be in person, in Oxford.

Opportunity Oxford Graduate Teachers may be asked to work at any time during the period and will have flexibility with their schedule. No one will be required to work more than 8 hours a week, and for a maximum of 12 weeks in total, and working hours will be by mutual agreement.

The Law Faculty rule on working hours for students is that graduate students may not work more than 8 hours per week or a reasonable average over the year.

Please check on the allowable hours in the other departments where you wish to advertise the opportunity, if applicable. Some departments allow more than 8 hours/week.

Anyone on a student visa may not work more than 20 hours per week during term across all projects under any circumstances. Please ensure if appointing a candidate on a student visa to confirm what other work they may be doing to ensure compliance with rules on illegal working.

The Opportunity Oxford Graduate Teachers will report to Kathryn Sandilands, Opportunity Oxford Co-Ordinator for Law.

During the online component of the programme, graduate students will be asked to provide feedback on short assignments which are intended to introduce them to legal materials such as cases and legislation and to enhance study skills. Eligibility

This opportunity is open to current graduate students in the Faculty of Law.

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.

The requirement to undertake the work in the UK is related to the University guidance on Overseas Working.  The additional tax and social security implications (i.e. employer costs) of working outside the UK can be substantial, and additional right to work checks are needed.  Overseas working is time-intensive to set up, and not a process the Faculty has the resources to support.

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £18.98 per hour which equates to University Grade 7, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

How to Apply

Please e-mail a short application to: recruitment@law.ox.ac.uk setting out your relevant experience and any restrictions on your ability to work during the above period, as well as the names of at least one referee.  Please include the reference ‘Opportunity Oxford’ in the subject line of your e-mail.
