Opportunity Oxford & Oxford Law Springboard Graduate Teachers

The Law Faculty is looking to engage up to 6 graduate students to assist Imogen Goold, Access & Outreach Co-ordinator, and Kathryn Sandilands, Opportunity Oxford Co-Ordinator, to teach the Opportunity Oxford Law Programme and Oxford Law Springboard bridging programme from July to September 2023.

Opportunity Oxford is a University scheme that provides offer-holders from disadvantaged backgrounds with some additional teaching over the summer holidays with the aim of giving them a "flying start" to their Oxford law degrees in Michaelmas Term.  We are looking for graduate students with the ability to teach in the areas of Roman, Constitutional or Criminal Law. Experience of teaching in these subjects is desirable but not essential, as is completion of the ‘Preparation for Teaching and Learning at Oxford’ course. Oxford Law Springboard is a separate Law Faculty initiative designed to make our bridging programme available to wider number of students whose studies may have been adversely affected.

Duties

Duties of Graduate Teachers will include giving tutorials, holding Q&A sessions with students, marking and giving feedback on online course exercises and on tutorial essays. For graduate students working in Roman Law duties will also extend to organising a moot.  The work is partly online, and partly in person in Oxford. 

Duration and hours

The distance learning will run from 3rd July to 28 August 2023 and participating students will be required to complete 75 hours (equivalent to 2 weeks’ full-time study) over the 6-week period.  Students will be asked to complete a number of short online activities intended to enhance introduce them to legal materials such as cases and legislation.

The residential will run from 3 – 17 September 2023 and will be full-time for the Opportunity Oxford participants.  The teaching for this part of the programme will be in person.

Opportunity Oxford Graduate Teachers may be asked to work at any time during the period and can work extremely flexibly within the schedule.  No one will be required to work more than 8 hours a week, and for a maximum of 12 weeks in total.

Duties

During the online component of the programme, graduate students will be asked to provide feedback on short assignments which are intended to introduce them to legal materials such as cases and legislation and to enhance study skills. During the residential portion of the programme, graduate students will be asked to deliver tutorials in Mods subjects (Constitutional, Roman, and Criminal law).

Reporting

The Opportunity Oxford Graduate Teachers will report to Kathryn Sandilands, Opportunity Oxford Co-Ordinator for Law.

Selection criteria

  • Preference will be given to applicants who have completed the PLTO or taught in these areas before
  •  Educated to degree level or equivalent, with an excellent educational record
  • Familiar with, or willing to learn and use, virtual learning environments, i.e. Canvas
  • An awareness of the issues surrounding widening access to higher education and a commitment to achieving the university’s policy aims in this area
  • Experience with teaching Law in tutorials is preferred, especially in one or more of the Mods subjects offered by the Law faculty (Roman Law, Constitutional Law, or Criminal Law) although some support will be provided

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to current graduate students in Law. It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK. 

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £19.02 per hour, which equates to University Grade 7, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Work must not commence without a letter of engagement or variable hours contract and a right to work check having been carried out by the Faculty HR Team. 

Graduate student engagement opportunities in the Faculty of Law usually fall into one of three categories: Research Assistant; Graduate Teaching Assistant; or Blog Editor. 

Full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year, regardless of the type of work.

Students may not work for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.
