Biography

Derick Luong is a Master of Philosophy in Law at St Peter's College, the University of Oxford. A fully tenured academic, Derick is undertaking his research at Oxford supervised by Professor Jacob Rowbottom, focusing specifically on the national security laws of the UK, the US, and Australia, and how they intersect with media freedom. 

Derick is also a Lecturer in Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Technology Sydney, and is an award-winning teacher specialising in criminal and media law. He has also previously taught at the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales. His academic work has been widely acknowledged - in 2024, Derick was named Academic of the Year finalist in the nationwide Australian Law Awards and was the recipient of the Daniel Tirado Excellence in Teaching Award. 

Before coming to Oxford, Derick practised at Australian top-tier law firm, MinterEllison. Derick's work as a legal practitioner has also been recognised through a number of industry awards, such as the 30 Under 30 Law awards, and he is an admitted solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. 

At Oxford, Derick is also an Editor and member of the editorial board of the Oxford University Commonwealth Law Journal (OUCLJ). He has written on comparative criminal and constitutional law and democracy, including work on freedom of expression, defamation, press freedom, and national security, and regularly makes submissions on criminal law matters.
