Biography

Laurenz Döring studied law at the University of Munich with a focus on public law. He is currently a research associate at the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Institute (University of Münster, Germany), where he develops his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Professor Hinnerk Wißmann. His dissertation illustrates legal conflicts arising from the use of algorithmic systems in public savings banks. In addition to providing associating legal-dogmatic work around the EU AI Act, his research particularly covers the relationship between the public purpose and economic efficiency of aforementioned financial institutions. He is especially interested in the impact of a shift towards artificial intelligence-based operations on vulnerable customer groups and their financial inclusion.

Temporarily supervised by Professor Bettina Lange, Laurenz will deepen his socio-legal analysis of this conflict during his time in Oxford. Laurenz will conduct his research visit during Michaelmas term supported by a scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
