Biography

Lucy Tu is a DPhil candidate at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. Her research investigates the dissemination and regulation of reproductive technologies, including human genome editing, non-invasive prenatal testing, and in vitro fertilization. Drawing on sociological and epidemiological methods, she examines population health in its technological, cultural, and legal contexts, with particular attention to how various actors (parents, healthcare providers/public health officials, judges) decide what constitutes a healthy and worthwhile life. Her doctoral research is supervised by Professor Nicole Stremlau and supported by the Rhodes Scholarship.

Lucy completed her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and History & Science (summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) at Harvard University, where she received the Thomas T. Hoopes Prize for excellence in scholarly work. Her research has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and Journal of the American Medical Association. Lucy is also a health and science writer, with words in The Guardian, Scientific American, and The Atlantic.
