Biography

Michel is an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice student at the Centre for Criminology. He has previously completed his undergraduate degree in Law at the University of São Paulo in Brazil and has worked extensively researching human rights violations in the prison system of the state of São Paulo. He has also researched the conceptualisation of xenophobia and violence against immigrants and refugees in Brazil, applying decolonial frameworks regarding racism, border-crossing, and identity. He got involved with an abolitionist family of prisoners' organisation in Brazil called "AMPARAR", whose work centred on creating support networks for national and foreign prisoners. In the UK, he just got an internship at the Association of Visitors to Immigration Detainees (AVID). His interest lies in abolition research and practice, and he is particularly interested in working towards ending all forms of detention and incarceration.
