Research Assistant for the Bonavero Institute-UNESCO projects at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights

The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights seeks one graduate research student to assist Dr Christos Kypraios (Programme Coordinator, Bonavero-UNESCO Massive Open Online Course and judicial symposium on freedom of expression) with the organisation of an international judicial symposium on freedom of expression (judicial symposium) and the 2023 UNESCO Global Conference on Universal Access to Information (Global IDUAI Conference). Both events will take place in Oxford in September 2023 and are co-organised by the Bonavero Institute and UNESCO (judicial symposium) and by the Bonavero Institute, UNESCO and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (Global IDUAI Conference).
Tasks for the Research Assistant will include:
- Assisting the Programme Coordinator and the Bonavero administration team with the two events’ programming, invitations and organisation;
- Providing technical assistance for the two events, supported by the IT and AV teams;
- Assisting with drafting and communicating information and reports relating to the two events, as well as to the Bonavero-UNESCO Massive Open Online Course on freedom of expression and safety of journalists (MOOC);
- Posting communications via social media and editing/posting recordings related to the the two events;
- Assisting with the issuance of certificates for the participants of the MOOC;
- Attending the bi-monthly Bonavero events planning meetings.
Duration and hours
Start date: 1 August 2023
Date by which the work must be completed: 30 November 2023
The Research Assistant will work up to 8 hours per week, in line with the Faculty’s restriction on working hours for students, the distribution of weekly hours to be agreed in advance with the Supervisor.
Reporting
The Research Assistant will report to Prof Kate O’Regan, Director of the Bonavero Institute, and work closely with the Programme Coordinator, Dr Christos Kypraios.
Requirements
- Current registration as a graduate research student at the University of Oxford.
- A solid understanding of and strong interest in the broad field of human rights.
- Excellent writing, editing and proof-reading skills, with the ability to write and edit publicity material, event reports and compose compelling social media posts.
- Demonstrable social media, communications and IT skills, including Zoom, PowerPoint, Excel and MS Teams.
- A highly organised, motivated individual with a willingness to work flexibly.
- The capacity to work well in a team.
Eligibility
The opportunity is open to graduate research students at the University of Oxford working or interested in the broad field of human rights, democracy and/or the rule of law. It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK and from 1 Spetember to 30 November at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, based at Mansfield College.
The Research Assistant should be based in Oxford at least from early September to 30 November (end date of the post) and be present at the two events.
Rate of Pay
The work will be paid at £17.02 per hour (including the exceptional non-consolidated uplift for 2022-23), which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.
In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students
Work must not commence without a letter of engagement or variable hours contract and a right to work check having been carried out by the Faculty Personnel Officer.
Graduate student engagement opportunities in the Faculty of Law usually fall into one of three categories: Research Assistant; Graduate Teaching Assistant; or Blog Editor.
Full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year, regardless of the type of work.
Students may not work for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.
