Research Assistant in Constitutional History

Professor Timothy Endicott is looking for a research assistant to help with research on the development of the UK constitution.

The project aims are (1) to write an article on the emergence of the constitutional conventions that institute and regulate executive governance, focusing on the period from the 1780s to the 1860s, and (2) to write a chapter on the history of the constitution for a textbook on constitutional and administrative law.

Tasks for the Research Assistant will include finding useful sources, reading and summarizing sources, reading and critiquing drafts of the article and the textbook chapter, constructing a timeline of constitutionally significant events for the textbook, and such other activities as may be useful for the project.

 

Duration and hours

Working hours: a total of up to 150 hours across the duration of the project, to be agreed with the Supervisor.

Start date: 22 July 2023

Date by which the work must be completed: 15 December 2023.

 

Reporting

The Research Assistant will report to Timothy Endicott.


Requirements

  • It is essential to have studied English history at degree level.
  • Excellent writing and research skills are essential.
  • Access to online search tools and a law library is essential.
  • Good administrative and IT skills are essential.
  • It is advantageous but not essential to have studied UK constitutional law.

The work can be done in any place in the UK where you have access to a good library and internet. Meetings with the PI & team members will be held either in-person in Oxford or online.

 

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to current graduate students at the University of Oxford and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students.

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.

 

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £17.02 per hour (including the exceptional non-consolidated uplift for 2022-23), which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.
