Research Assistant in Professional Services Data Preparation

Professor John Armour is looking for one research assistant to help with gathering and preparing data for internal research being carried out by the Law Faculty
The project aims are to conduct research into various aspects of the functioning of the Law Faculty’s current programmes.
Tasks for the Research Assistant will focus on data acquisition and preparation, aka “data wrangling” activities. This will require good proficiency the handling and manipulation of quantitative and textual data accessed in PDF, Excel and Word formats, and use of Python and/or R to manipulate and organise quantitative and textual data from these formats.
Duration and hours
Working hours: a total of up to 80 hours across the duration of the project, to be agreed with the project supervisor.
Start date: 1 December 2023
Date by which the work must be completed: 22 February 2024, or 12 weeks after start.
Reporting
The Research Assistant will report to Professor John Armour.
Requirements
- Experience of the handling and manipulation of quantitative and textual data accessed in PDF, Excel and Word formats is essential.
- Proficiency in the use of Python and/or R to manipulate and organise quantitative and textual data from PDF, Excel and Word formats is essential.
- Good spreadsheet (Excel) skills are essential.
- An understanding of, or willingness to learn, the appropriate precautions to take when dealing with confidential and organisationally sensitive data is essential.
Your normal place of work will be the St Cross Building or the Manor Road Building, Manor Road. However, provided you have the agreement of your PI/Supervisor, and a suitable space to work (including library access if required), it may be possible to undertake the work remotely, which could be anywhere in the UK.

Eligibility
This opportunity is open to current graduate students in the Faculty of Law, Department of Economics, Department of Politics and International Relations and Department of Computer Science.
It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.
Rate of Pay
The work will be paid at £17.03 per hour, which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.
In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.
