Research Assistant, Radical Lawyering Project

Professor Mulcahy is looking for a research assistant to help with the collection of documents for an archive on radical lawyering which will be lodged with the British Library.

The aims are of this larger AHRC project are to create a sound and paper archive on radical lawyering in Law Centres in England and Wales.  In addition to collecting the annual reports of Law Centres from the 1970s onwards the project team are conducting a series of life story interview which will be made available on an open access basis at the conclusion of the project.

Tasks for the Research Assistant will be to support Professor Mulcahy include:

  • Identifying law centre annual reports held by law Centres and negotiating the gifting of them to the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies,
  • Identifying law centre annual reports held in local libraries and arranging for copies to be made and delivered to the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies
  • Logging all acquisitions and sources
  • General support which the project and in publicising this stage of data collection with Law Centres

 

Duration and hours

Working hours: a total of up to 192 hours across the duration of the project, to be agreed with the project supervisor.

Start date: 3 January 2024

Date by which the work must be completed: 18 June 2024

 

Reporting

The Research Assistant will report to Professor Linda Mulcahy.

 

Requirements

  • A good understanding of the field of law and access to justice issues is essential
  • Experience of empirical research and handling data is essential.
  • Experience of managing social media communications is essential.
  • Experience of law referencing systems is essential.
  • Good spreadsheet (Excel) skills are essential.
  • Experience of archival work is desirable.
  • A knowledge of the advice sector is desirable.

Your normal place of work will be the Manor Road Building, Manor Road.  However, provided you have the agreement of your PI/Supervisor, and a suitable space to work (including library access if required), it may be possible to undertake the work remotely, which could be anywhere in the UK.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to current graduate students in the Faculty of Law, and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students within the Law Faculty.

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK. 

 

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £17.03 per hour, which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.
