Research Assistant, ReMeD (Resilient Media for Democracy in the Digital Age)

Nicole Stremlau is looking for one research assistant to contribute to an EU Horizon project, Resilient Media for Democracy in the Digital Age (ReMeD). The project is starting in March 2023 and the RA will support the launch and initial stages of the project including the development of the Oxford-led Work Package on Media Law and Regulations for Diversity and Pluralism. This Work Package focuses primarily on Europe, although also considers global perspectives.
The RA will be expected to work across tasks that include reviewing literature and mapping of the regulatory frameworks for social media platforms focused on issues such as transparency of algorithms and recommender systems, liability for harmful content, quality of content moderation systems and algorithmic bias. The Research Assistant will also contribute to research on the effectiveness and governance of fact-checking programmes that are intended to address dis/misinformation online.
Duration and hours
Working hours: a total of up to 120 hours are available across the duration of the project, to be agreed with the Supervisor.
Start date: 15th March 2023.
Date by which the work must be completed: 9th June 2023
Reporting
The Research Assistant will report to Nicole Stremlau.
Requirements
- A background in media law and/or internet studies is essential.
- Strong writing and analysis skills are essential.
- The ability to work with an international network of research institutions is essential.
- Good admin and IT skills are essential.
- A general understanding of the field of mis/disinformation and online hate speech is desirable
- A knowledge of other research programmes and organizations working in this field, particularly in Europe, is desirable.
The work can be done in any place in the UK where you have access to a good library and internet. Meetings with the PI will be either held in Oxford or online.
Eligibility
This opportunity is open to current Oxford graduate students and is best suited to students in the Faculty of Law, Oxford Internet Institute, Sociology and related social science disciplines. The hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students within the Law Faculty.
It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK although travel to partner institutions in Europe may be required for specific events.
Rate of Pay
The work will be paid at £16.49 per hour (including the exceptional non-consolidated uplift for 2022-23), which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.
In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.
