Research Assistant(s) for OSCOLA

Professors James Goudkamp and Donal Nolan seek one or two research assistants to help produce the 5th edition of the Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities (“OSCOLA”), including the incorporation of the separate Public International Law supplement. 

The task for the Research Assistant(s) will be to assist with the 5th edition. This will require the Research Assistant(s) to (inter alia) consider other style/citation guides, consult with stakeholders such as the editorial boards of the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies and Oxford University Commonwealth Law Journal, the Bodleian Law Library and subject teaching groups, considering informal questions/queries received regarding OSCOLA and the like.

 

Duration and hours

Working hours: up to a total of 200 hours (across both research assistants if two are appointed), to be agreed with the Supervisors.

Start date: as soon as possible.

Date by which the work must be completed: 30 July 2023.

 

Reporting

The Research Assistant will report to James Goudkamp in the first instance.

 

Requirements

  • Attention to detail.
  • Responsiveness to supervisor feedback/emails.
  • Familiarity with legal citation and guides to legal citation.
  • Good text editing and formatting skills are essential.
  • Ability to use library and online resources effectively is essential.
  • Competence using Microsoft Word

The work can be done in any place where you have access to a good library and internet. Meetings with the PI/team members can be held either in-person in Oxford or online.

 

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to current graduate research students in the Faculty of Law, and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students within the Law Faculty.

 

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £16.49 per hour (including the exceptional non-consolidated uplift for 2022-23), which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year, regardless of the type of work.

Students may not work for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.
