Research Assistants x 3 for a Workshop on violence in India

Professor Shazia Choudhry is looking for three research assistants to help with the organisation of a workshop (19th and 20th April 2023 at Wadham College) and with final outputs for the project “Surviving Violence: Everyday resilience and gender justice in rural-urban India”

The project aims to address the gap between law and policy and access to support services and justice for domestic violence (DV) victims in India.

Tasks for the Research Assistants will be split between the following:

(1) assisting with report writing – all three RAs to attend the workshop as rapporteurs and work on drafting the conference report which will include key workshop highlights, summaries of the workshop sessions, focusing on critical issues addressed, important results presented and key recommendations put forward.

(2) assisting with research for the project outputs by carrying out a literature review on 

  • concepts and understandings of justice within the context of violence against women, 
  • the relevance of a state crime analysis to violence against women and 
  • updating the literature review on the Indian legal and policy context on violence against women.

Each Research Assistant will be assigned to focus on a specific sub-task to complete for Task (2).

 

Duration and hours

Working hours: a total of 80 hours for each research assistant across the duration of the project, to be agreed with the Supervisor.

Start date: 15th February 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter

Date by which the work must be completed: 9th May 2023, or 12 weeks after start date. 

 

Reporting

The Research Assistants will report to Professor Shazia Choudhry

 

Requirements

  • A good understanding of the field of  law is essential.
  • Experience of law referencing systems is essential.
  • A knowledge  of the law and policy framework relating to violence against women and  international human rights law is desirable.
  • Experience of the legal systems in the following countries is desirable: India.
  • The following language skills are desirable: Hindi and local dialects in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
  • Experience of empirical research is desirable.
  • Experience of using Drupal or other website content management systems is desirable.
  • Experience of the following software/applications is desirable: Excel, Kobo.
  • Experience of managing social media communications is desirable.
  • Good spreadsheet (Excel) skills are desirable.

The Research Assistants must be available to attend the workshop in-person on 19th and 20th April 2023 at Wadham College, Oxford in order to carry out Task 1) for the project. Work on Task 2) for the project can for the most part be done in any place in the UK where you have access to a good library and internet. Meetings with the PI/team members will be held in-person in Oxford or online.

 

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to current graduate students in the Faculty of Law, and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students within the Law Faculty.

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK. 

 

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £16.49 per hour (including the exceptional non-consolidated uplift for 2022-23), which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

 

Funding

This opportunity is funded by a grant from the British Academy on which Professor Choudhry is a co-investigator with Dr Philippa Williams from Queen Mary University London (QMUL).
