The Public International Law Research Group in the Oxford Law Faculty (PIL@Oxford) seeks three graduate research students who are interested in assisting the Group with the organisation and communication of our academic events, and with research, during the current academic.

The Events, Communications and Research Assistants will have the opportunity to get involved with a variety of activities carried out by PIL@Oxford. In particular, the successful candidates will work closely with Professor Dapo Akande in the organization of the weekly Public International Law Research Seminars, the Public International Law Discussion Group, as well as other conferences and events held throughout the year.

Duties will include:

  • assisting with event support and organization, eg, contributing to the planning of events, inviting speakers,  preparing and circulating event notices and other materials, requesting purchase orders and invoices, collecting participant expense claims, providing in-person audio-visual support with Teams/Zoom, taking minutes, etc.
  • Website and online support, e.g. keeping the PIL@Oxford website updated, maintain and communicating information to the PIL mailing list, preparing news and events items, social media posts etc.
  • General research support, e.g. finding legal resources, preparing literature reviews,
  • Editorial support, eg assisting with writing, editing and proof-reading of academic outputs and reports.

 

Duration and Hours

Working hours: a total of up to 150 hours per research assistant across the duration of the project, with distribution of hours to be agreed with Professor Akande.

Start date: 2 January 2025

Date by which the work must be completed: 31 July 2025
 

Reporting

The Assistants will report to Professor Dapo Akande in the first instance.

 

Requirements

  • A primary or Masters degree in law is essential.
  • A solid understanding of and strong interest in the broad field of public international law is essential.
  • Being a highly organised, motivated individual with a willingness to work flexibly is essential.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proof-reading skills, with the ability to write and edit publicity material, and event reports is essential.
  • Demonstrable communications and IT skills, including Zoom, PowerPoint, Excel and MS Teams is essential.
  • Experience of managing social media communications is desirable.

You will need to be based in Oxford during term time and be present at in-person events, workshops and conferences as requested.  It may be possible to undertake the work remotely outside of term time.

In all cases the work must be undertaken in the UK.

Eligibility

The opportunity is open to graduate research students at the University of Oxford working or interested in public international law. 

 

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £18.43 per hour, which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Work must not commence without a letter of engagement or variable hours contract and a right to work check having been carried out by the Faculty Personnel Officer.

Graduate student engagement opportunities in the Faculty of Law usually fall into one of three categories: Research AssistantGraduate Teaching Assistant; or Blog Editor

The University guidance on paid work for Oxford graduate students recommends that full-time graduate research students ensure that any paid work should still allow them to spend at least 40 hours per week for a minimum 44 weeks of the year on their studies. Full-time graduate taught students are recommended not to undertake more than 8 hours’ paid work each week during term-time study periods.  There are additional rules for students with visas wishing to undertake paid work. 

Students may not work for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.
