Teaching Assistant, Law & Computer Science

Professor Rebecca Williams, the convenor of Law & Computer Science, is looking for a teaching assistant to help with the logistics and running of the Law & Computer Science option for the BCL/MJur/MLF/4th year/MSC in CS degree programmes.

The teaching assistant will help to keep the Canvas (VLE) website up to date, liaise with guest lecturers and students, and ensure the smooth running of the course. We are able to create this one-year position thanks to funding from Barclays Eagle Labs, providing us with a unique opportunity to enhance our provision for this course during 2022-23.

Tasks will include contacting guest lecturers, booking rooms, populating and updating ORLO reading lists and the Canvas site, liaising with the course convenors, students and lecturers, assisting with timetabling, lecture recordings, and other related tasks.

 

Duration and hours

Total number of hours of work available: 60

More work will be necessary before the start of each of Michaelmas Term 2022, and Hilary Term 2023, with smaller amounts during each term.

Start date: 14 October 2022

Date by which the work must be completed: 1 May 2023

 

Reporting

The Teaching Assistant will report to Rebecca Williams

 

Requirements

A knowledge of the field of law and technology is desirable.

Experience of using Canvas or other website content management systems is highly desirable.

It is highly desirable that the person will be based in Oxford and thus able to attend teaching sessions where necessary.

The ability to be proactive and interact politely with other members of the Faculty is vital.

It is also vital that the person appointed is able to be organised, maintain momentum and deliver results to schedule.

 

Eligibility

This work is open to current graduate students in the Faculty of Law and the Department of Computer Science. The working hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students in the Faculty of Law. It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.

 

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £16.07 per hour (which equates to University Grade 6, point 1), on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the end of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

This position is funded by a donation from Eagle Labs.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Work must not commence without a letter of engagement or variable hours contract and a right to work check having been carried out by the Faculty Personnel Officer.

Full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year, regardless of the type of work.

Students may not work as Research Assistants for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.
