Dr Marija Jovanović cited in Council of Europe report on the UK's human trafficking measures

The Council of Europe's Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) has published its fourth evaluation report assessing the UK's compliance with the Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.
The report engages with Dr Marija Jovanović's scholarship on modern slavery in the context of UK immigration and criminal justice law – particularly in relation to the disqualification of victims from accessing support where they are considered to pose a threat to public order. Dr Jovanović is a Research Fellow in Business and Human Rights at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights and Co-Investigator at the Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre in Oxford.
Two of Dr Jovanović's papers are cited in the Council of Europe report. One examines how UK prisons identify and support adult modern slavery survivors and makes a series of recommendations to improve practices. The other looks at how the UK has operationalised the non-punishment principle for trafficking survivors, where unlawful acts have been committed due to exploitation or coercion.
