UNIQ and EXPLAW mentors

The Law Faculty Outreach and Admissions Team, Andrew Higgins, Emma White and Zoe Campbell are looking for three graduate students to assist with the 2021 Faculty of Law Summer Schools, UNIQ and EXPLAW, in two roles: one Lead Mentor and two Mentors.

UNIQ and EXPLAW are the summer schools offered by the Faculty of Law, scheduled to run from the 19th of July 2021.  EXPLAW runs for 3 days (approximately 23 students) and UNIQ for 6 days (45 students).   Offered virtually this year via Zoom.

The program is designed to encourage, inform, and prepare students who are interested in applying to study Law at the University of Oxford who come from an access background.

Mentors will be expected to run the following sessions:

  • Tutorial How To and walk through (large group)
  • Tutorials: Causation Criminal Law, Self Defence and Roman Law (materials will be provided)
  • Practice undergraduate admissions interviews
  • Lecture support

The Lead Mentor will run these additional sessions:

  • Lectures and Tutorials: “What, How and Why” 
  • Note taking: How to.
  • Mock Tutorial/Mock Interview

Duration and hours

Total number of hours of work available:

1) Lead Mentor:  15 hours

2) Mentors: 13 hours

Maximum number of hours of work per week:  No more than 8 hours per week hours in line with the Faculty's restrictions on working hours for students.

Start date: 19th July 2021

Date by which the work will be completed: 30th July 2021

Reporting

The Mentors will report their working hours (timesheets) to Zoe Campbell and Emma White.

Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • A general understanding of the field of law
  • Experience using Zoom and Teams
  • Experience giving undergraduate tutorials
  • Experience with undergraduate admissions interviews, or equivalent.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of undergraduate study at the University of Oxford
  • Experience of Access or Widen Participation including but not limited to previous experience in teaching on any of Oxford's access programmes - UNIQ, Explaw, Pathways, Opportunity Oxford - or access related initiatives at other universities

Eligibility

This position is open to current graduate research students in the Law Faculty and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students.  It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.

Rate of Pay

The rate of pay for this work is £28.29 per contact teaching hour, which is a University rate, and includes preparation time and holiday pay.

Funding

This position is funded by the University’s UNIQ Programs and a donation from Freshfield Law Firm.
