In some subjects, a lower proportion of women than men obtain First Class (Distinction) degrees at Oxford University (the so-called gender gap). Law is one of these subjects.

Research shows that this gender gap is not down to: differential intelligence; differential ability; lower self-efficacy and confidence; anxiety; or physical differences.

Other theories are promising but not conclusively proved. These include: stereotype threat; assessment environment; differential approach to learning and examinations; teaching styles; understanding of assessment criteria; examination anxiety; female academic self-concept; perfectionism; psycho-social factors.

Professor Mindy Chen-Wishart will discuss some of these, coupled with personal observations and suggestions for addressing them, with the aim of stimulating reflection.

This event is aimed at Taught and Research Graduate Law students who self-identify as women or with non-binary genders.
