Yuliya Brin

Yuliya Brin is a doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki, focusing on domestic violence during armed conflict and gender politics in Russia, Eastern Europe, and post-Soviet space. She is a researcher for the FEVER project (2025-2028). In this project, her work involves a combination of conducting research on family violence in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia I am also performing administrative duties necessary for the project. 

In her PhD dissertation, she studies the effectiveness of the Istanbul Convention and other legal instruments on addressing the issue of violence against women during and after the period of armed conflict, focusing on the comparison of Ukraine, Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. More broadly, she has done research on topics such as anti-gender politics, militarization, democratic backsliding, and gender politics in post-socialist societies. She has recently released a policy brief with the Eastern European and Transatlantic Network at Carleton University. 

She obtained her MAs in Russian and Eastern European Studies at the University of Helsinki and in International and Comparative Law at the University of Turku and BA in Social Sciences and Law at Tallinn University.  In June 2026, she carried out UNA Europa-funded research mobility at KU Leuven working together with the LINES research group on comparative research related to gender, violence, and political contestation in Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
