The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights is pleased to launch a reading group that will interrogate  foundational questions about the idea of human rights. We will read canonical texts authored by some of the most influential global thinkers and actors whose works have shaped the conceptual vocabulary of our political modernity as well as the potential and the limits of the idea of human rights.

The reading group will meet at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights once or twice during term time in hybrid format. Participants can attend the reading group in person or via Zoom.

For our first session, we will read Karl Marx’s On the Jewish Question (1844) and Hannah Arendt’s ‘The Decline of the Nation-State and the End of the Rights of Man’  Chapter 9, Origins of Totalitarianism (1951)
