AI Chatbots and Digital Addiction: An EU Law Analysis
Abstract: The presentation addresses digital addiction in the context of chatbot-user interactions. Chatbots, which are large language models with conversational capabilities, can present addictive features. These features may lead to various harms for users, especially when coupled with commercial practices that aim to increase engagement with the technology. Such harms challenge established conceptions in both the medical and legal fields. This brings to the forefront the question of whether tort liability, notably product liability, and European digital laws can provide an adequate response.
